The Castle
Like other castles in the area, it was built by the Pallavicino marquises to control the via Emilia, the via Francigena and the precious salt of Salsomaggiore and Tabiano, a fundamental ingredient for the birth of some gastronomic specialties of the territory such as Parma Ham.
In its first four centuries of life, the history of the Castle traces the events of the Italian High and Late Middle Ages: wars between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, between the emperor and the Papacy with sieges, destruction, conquests, betrayals, but also loves and conspiracies between relatives.
After centuries of disputes, the Castle experienced a period of semi-abandonment, only to rise to new life at the end of the nineteenth century thanks to Giacomo and Rosa Corazza who made it their residence.
Since 2016, Castello di Tabiano opened to the public on the occasion of guided tours, special events or for private celebrations. Guests of the Castle can stay in the houses of the ancient medieval village now transformed into the Relais de Charme Tabiano Castello and stop for lunch or dinner in the charming restaurant il Caseificio.

Relais de Charme Tabiano Castello
With a skilful renovation work, the Antico Borgo on the slopes of the Castle has been transformed into a Relais de Charme immersed in calm and greenery, preserving the charm and authenticity of medieval residences, with great attention to respect for history, environmental sustainability, links with the territory. Leaving the external structures dating back to the feudal era intact, the ancient rooms of the Borgo’s farmers and artisans have been transformed into rooms and apartments complete with all comforts.
Surrounded by a green lawn, two swimming pools are available to guests of the Relais or for daily admissions, together with a wellness center housed in a natural cave where massages and body treatments can be booked.
Also in the Antico Borgo, the Dairy restaurant offers typical local and non-local cuisine, based on km0 products for breakfasts, lunches and dinners on the splendid panoramic terrace or in the rooms where Parmigiano Reggiano was once produced.
Beautiful green courtyards all around the ancient buildings of the Borgo, embellished with roses, lemons, pomegranates, along with the restaurant’s vegetable garden, orchard and hundreds of olive trees.
“Everything is peace and silence” one could say, paraphrasing Leopardi.
Farmhouses
In the hills around the Castle, four beautifully restored farmhouses are ideal for holidays in the hills of Parma, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, or for weddings, ceremonies and … children’s parties with pizza cooked in the old wood-burning ovens. Located in very panoramic positions, with a view that sweeps from the Po Valley to the Alps, they offer the charm of the past with all modern comforts.
Surrounded by large gardens, they all offer swimming pools, large porches and panoramic views of the Castle or the surrounding hills. Old stone and brick facades, wooden beams and terracotta floors have been recovered to create a welcoming atmosphere, full of authenticity.
The farm
With the Corazza family, the Castle of Tabiano becomes the seat of a thriving farm. Carlo Corazza, continuing the work of his parents, buys new farms that are added to the land purchased by the Pallavicinos, builds new stables and barns, renovates the farmhouses. The Parmigiano Reggiano produced in the Old Dairy is left to mature in the Castle’s warehouses, while the wine is produced in the cellars. Various objects and machinery have remained as evidence of the Castle’s rural past, such as the large weighing machine outside the entrance door, or the barrels and vats in the suggestive vaulted cellars.
Today the fields all around the Castle are cultivated with vines, olive trees, ancient grains with which we produce our stone-ground flour, alfalfa, rich in proteins and able to fix nitrogen by improving the quality of the soil, organic fruit trees such as pomegranates and apricots to eat fresh at the Dairy restaurant or for the homemade jam.
